    IE problem

    I have been using Apache 1.3.27 on a web server for a long time, using virtual hosts and cgi
    programs but have now moved to a new server and have installed the latest Apache 2.4.2.

    This has a separate httpd-vhosts.conf file and apart from uncommenting the
    "Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf" line in the http.conf and then adding almost the original
    virtual host data into the httpd-vhosts.conf file, it is basically a virgin install.

    The problem is that while the web site works perfectly when accessed using
    Firefox or Chrome, it often will not work when using Internet Explorer 9 or above or Edge; it
    just sites there with a blank screen with the timer icon spinning. While this is happening, I can
    still go in immediately using Firefox so the web server itself has not crashed. However, if I
    restart Apache then using IE the web site comes up immediately and I can use it fine for a
    while but then I will go back in 5 minutes later and can't access it again.

    Is there some setting that I need to add or change?

    Thanks.

    I've had a similar situation in the past. The part that took me longest to figure out was the fact the issue WAS in relation to vhosts, BUT nothing to do with any of the sites attempting to be accessed and experiencing this. It was due to defined vhosts that have become old/unused, and either had their folder removed from the filesystem or similar making the vhost invalid. Why this issued the way it did, via IE/Edge, and wasn't a solid/constant issue (working fine after a reload/restart), I never figured out. But once all my paths were correctly mapped and confirmed, all has been clean.

    Thanks for the reply. As it stands, the Test Configuration tool passes and there are no errors when I try and restart Apache. I have also removed
    anything other than the one website section in the vhosts file (between <VirtualHost *:80> and </VirtualHost> and looked through the file very
    carefully to see if there is anything that might be wrong, but there doesn't seem to be anything. The fact that it is only IE that doesn't work
    properly is confusing enough but that it is intermittent only on IE doesn't make any sense to me all. I will keep trying but at the moment I dare not
    make the new server live.

    When it is an issue, does it ever error-out/time-out? Does the page successfully load, but ended up taking like 5 minutes? Or does it seem to be loading/waiting forever? In the development tools(F12), under the 'Console' or 'Network' tab, does it present anything of concern? Does this happen on specific file types, or even .txt or image files? If willing, would you be able to offer us a view of your VirtualHost?

    An example from beginning of my httpd-vhosts.conf:
    <VirtualHost _default_:80>
    DocumentRoot "D:/htdocs/triple_nothing/hellzoneinc.com/projects"
    </VirtualHost>

    # hellzoneinc.com

    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName hellzoneinc.com
    ServerAlias www.hellzoneinc.com
    DocumentRoot "D:/htdocs/triple_nothing/hellzoneinc.com/www"
    ErrorLog "logs/hellzoneinc.com-error.log"
    CustomLog "logs/hellzoneinc.com-access.log" common
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName mail.hellzoneinc.com
    ServerAlias www.mail.hellzoneinc.com
    ProxyPreserveHost On
    ProxyPass / http://mail.hellzoneinc.com:81/
    ProxyPassReverse / http://mail.hellzoneinc.com:81/
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName projects.hellzoneinc.com
    ServerAlias www.projects.hellzoneinc.com
    DocumentRoot "D:/htdocs/triple_nothing/hellzoneinc.com/projects"
    ErrorLog "logs/hellzoneinc.com-project-error.log"
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName pma.hellzoneinc.com
    ServerAlias www.pma.hellzoneinc.com
    DocumentRoot "D:/htdocs/triple_nothing/hellzoneinc.com/pma"
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName users.hellzoneinc.com
    ServerAlias www.users.hellzoneinc.com
    DocumentRoot "D:/htdocs"
    </VirtualHost>
