currently have apache with:
mod_perl/1.23 mod_ssl/2.6.4 OpenSSL/0.9.4

What's the best way to install php as well and not screw up my current setup?

You must have DSO support for your current built, then you may add PHP as a share module to your existing Apache and load it dynamically. If not, you must recompile everything all over again.
