Is there a way to authenticate user from the HTML page via login form instead of pop-up browser window that asks for passwords?

I still want to use .htpassword files and basic authentication, I just don't like that generic pop-up login prompt.

I think there must be a PERL script for that.

I'll appreciate any info on that one.
