    Hi I can't believe you still haven't given up

    Both hosts have this line in them
    Code:
    127.0.0.1 z
    When I ping z, it responds based on whats in /etc/hosts not /Applicaitons/XAMPP/etc/hosts
    Code:
    bash-3.2# cat httpd-vhosts.conf
    NameVirtualHost *:80

    <VirtualHost *:80>
            DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/htdocs/"
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *:80>
            DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/vhosts/z"
            ServerName z
            ErrorLog "/Applications/XAMPP/vhosts/z/local-error.log"
            <Directory "/Applications/XAMPP/vhosts/z">
                    Allow from all
                    AllowOverride All
                    Order allow, deny
    	        Require all granted
            </Directory>
    </VirtualHost>
    Code:
    bash-3.2# cat httpd.conf
    #
    # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
    # In particular, see
    # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
    # for a discussion of each configuration directive.
    #
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    #
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/Applications/xampp/xamppfiles" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/Applications/xampp/xamppfiles/logs/foo.log".

    #
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    #
    # Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
    # ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
    # at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
    # httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
    #
    ServerRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles"

    #
    # Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
    # ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
    # directive.
    #
    # Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
    # prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
    #
    #Listen 12.34.56.78:80

    ok, I didn't realize that the ServerRoot was pointing to ServerRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles".
    and, the default DocumentRoot was pointing to DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs" .

    this means you will have to move that "vhosts" folder (along with the "z" subfolder) from /Applications/XAMPP to /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles because it needs to be under/below/inside the ServerRoot directive.

    next, you will have to rewrite httpd-vhosts.conf like so:
    Code:
    NameVirtualHost *:80

    <VirtualHost *:80>
            DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/"
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *:80>
            DocumentRoot "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/vhosts/z"
            ServerName z
            ErrorLog "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/vhosts/z/local-error.log"
            <Directory "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/vhosts/z">
                    Allow from all
                    AllowOverride All
                    Order allow, deny
    	        Require all granted
            </Directory>
    </VirtualHost>
    then, restart xampp-apache with
    Code:
    /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp stopapache
    /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp startapache
    And "cross your fingers".

    Didn't work.

    Maybe this gives you some ideas:

    I stop Apache
    Code:
    bash-3.2# /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp stopapache
    XAMPP: Stopping Apache...ok.
    I type this in browser:
    Code:
    http://localhost/z/
    Still runs the php script. Which shouldn't since I stopped Apache, right?

    Use the process monitor to see if there are any other instances of httpd/apache/apache2 running and kill them if there are any.

    Also, go into your system preferences and click on Sharing and make sure that "web sharing" is unchecked.

    Then, run your "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp startapache" and see if http://localhost/z is working.

    I'm running out of things to try, but, I don't know what all you've changed, or what all commands you've run, during this whole ordeal [other than what you've listed in this thread]. If I had physical access to the macbook [so I could see for myself what was going on], I could probably have things working properly in about 10-15minutes. But, thats not an option, so, we'll keep trudging along this way.

    Hi;

    I have some good news. Progress! We got it working, partially.

    Now when I go to http://z it shows the content of /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/vhost/z

    Which is correct

    BUT it does not parse PHP code! This
    PHP Code:
     <?php echo "HI";?>
    prints
    <?php echo "HI";?>
    So we need to get php parser to work I guess. Please note that files in http://localhost dont get complied either.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks DonR

    in your httpd.conf file for XAMPP, just above this line
    Code:
    # Virtual hosts
    Include /Applications/XAMPP/etc/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf
    add this
    Code:
    #XAMPP
    Include /Applications/XAMPP/etc/extra/httpd-xampp.conf
    ..as I believe it may contain the code needed to get PHP working.

    you may also want to uncomment the Include for this section
    Code:
    # Various default settings
    #Include /Applications/XAMPP/etc/extra/httpd-default.conf
    then, run the following to get XAMPP apache to reload its config files
    Code:
    /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/xampp reloadapache
