I am running RedHat 6.2 with MySQL, Apache, and PHP4 installed. MySQL works. Apache can see the Apache test page. Apache cannot see a test page (test.html) that I put in the htdocs directory. I started apache (./apachectl start) and got "httpd started". Then I stop apache (./apachectl stop) and get "httpd (no pid file) not running". DocumenRoot is set to "/usr/local/apache/htdocs" How do I get apache running?

I am not sure how you have Apache installed, but try apachectl graceful or apachectl reload or restart. To check to see if the http daemon is running, you can type
    ps ax | grep httpd
hope this helps, but i am sure someone else can explain it better
