Hi I'm a newbie to apache and have OS X (apple's freeBSD + apache) OS System.

OK this is my question. I want to imitate what I would normally see on a regular ISP webserver, ie:

I don't want to see /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables/ I want to see /usr???/public_html/cgi-bin/

I don't want to see /Library/WebServer/Documents/ I want to see /usr??/public_html/

I'm sure this is done somewhere in httpd.cong but I'm lost here. I had enough trouble with

DirectoryIndex index.html index.php index.shtml

But that is something you can figure out if you install php/perl scripts on to a site that is hosted.

Since, I don't have broadband access (Japan is lagging) I hoping to set-up a development server for websites that I work on as a hobby. (the reason why I bought OS X)

Also, I was wondering how different is OS X configurations from a regular server setup? Sure, a silly question since there are various flavors of unix available and different setups.

It would just be nice to have information like this for people like who are "slightly" unixable but not yet a true unix user. :-) hehe, just the right amount of danger here, know something but not enough to stay out of trouble beyond the fact that what I know is enough to get me trouble. :-)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just specify a different PREFIX layout instead of the one OS X used by default. A few default layouts can be found from config.layout file in the root dir of your Apache src.

BTW, if you don't like the default layout, why use OS X in the first place?

thanks for the advice I'll check the config.layout.

Why OS X ... because I'm a mac user and all my applications are for the mac. Why throw software away just to use unix based system. OS X is just simple enough for me to get my feet wet, yet, powerful enough to bother to learn.

It does have that benefit and the power of apache and all that semihard core folks could appreciate. The GUI is like windows versus mac, in my opinion, a difference of taste and style. Your choice either way doesn't bother me.
