Question ASP to PHP Conversion

Hello everyone,

I could really do with some guidance. I am currently hosting my website on a Windows Server, and use ASP pages for accessing MS Access database data and also CDONTS for forms to email.

I was just wondering if I were to swap to Linux hosting, how easy or hard ( would it be to change these pages from ASP to PHP with the exact same functionality.

Your help would be MUCH MUCH appreciated

Many thanks,
Kelly

It's obviously NOT my business but I'll ask anyway...
Oh and feel free NOT to respond if you don't want to!

Why would you want to change from one server to the other?
and why PHP ?

I'm curious that's all!

thanks

Vlince

Question

Basically my current Hosting company are just not that reliable at all as my website is constantly down so it is a case of I NEED to change Servers.

The reason I am considering Linux is because they appear to be cheaper. Nosey

Can you help?

Thanks,
Kelly

Hehe...me Nosey? Nah...concerned yes

I give my suggestion.

Honestly its cheaper to change hosting company then having to re-write an entire web site/web application in another language.

Its cheaper money wise and time wise...but by all means, if you have both(time and money) then go for it!

Remember one thing though, PHP is simply another SERVER-SIDE language just as good as ASP. From my understanding, it isn't a language issue so why change language?

It's an hosting issue and companies are fighting for new clients, you can get real deals out there...

Anyway its your choice!

If you go on an Appache server, you can still RUN ASP code.
You'll have to buy a third party component from Chilisoft that'll enable ASP pages to run on Appache servers

You know kellysmith the grass isn't greener on the other side so don't expect the Linux people/world to be friendlier then the Windows ones!

Hope this helps!
Sincerely

Vlince

As vlince said, you can run asp on apache servers, though I've heard some people say they were unimpressed with chilisoft.

I would say it might be worthwhile to look around and see if you can get a good windows server for a similar price, and save on the conversion. However, if you decide that going to linux and rewriting your pages is the way to go, it can definitely be done. Accessing databases and sending email is not particularly difficult, so if you got a good php coder, it probably could be done pretty quickly, depending on the size of the site and the complexity. That might be a good question for the php forum.

Whichever way you go, good luck!
