(noob) starting with asp.net

What do I need to get started with asp.net?

I have a knowledge of visual basic 4,5, and 6 and a lot of knowledge of html, xml, sql and php.

I have seen ASP.NET Web Matrix, is it worth buying Visual Studio? I have an xp computer, can easily setup IIS for dotnet or is it worth renting some server space. Should I stat with access or should I delve straight into SQL Server.

Once I have the right tools what areas will really show off .net? High end rad tools? xml integration?
