I apologize if this will turn out to be one of those threads with no definite answer.
I am going to attend an 8-week class soon and I need to choose between Java or COBOL.
Programming Experience: Classroom only (complete newbie)
Previously Used Language: C++
Of the two, which is "better", I know it is subjective, to learn for an 8-week class (actually it is only 7-week class since the 8th week is just the final exam) and better to learn in my own time?

Which one are you going to use later on? That's the only thing that you should be thinking about.

Cobol is aged and dying, but it's still very popular in banking and telco companies. If I had to choose between java and cobol, I'd choose java. However, both languages are near the bottom of my list.
