Arrow An idea on a News Section Insert, need help with code...

Hi, I hope the title of this thread is sufficient for the rules. A while back I picked up "Beginning PHP4" ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=books&n=507846 ) and I began reading it again. I've been pretty busy in my first year of college, but it's finally settling down a little. I've also neglected my site a while for school, but this is all changing since I'm reading the book again and I have ideas for the news section on my main page.

ANYWAYS, if my site is up ( http://www.ravynx.net/ ) check it out. The raid system that's hosting me crashed recently and the backups were corrupted. It's about the same as I have had it though. Once you can see the front of my page, you can see I have links on the left and right and then my content fits right in the middle below my banner.

What I'm trying to do is learn more php so I can create a script to where I can login to a separate page with login/password and then type out news or whatnot in a textbox, timestamp it, and submit it. It'll then be posted on the top of the news section/front page. Now, I'd only like to keep about 10 posts on the front page. Once it goes past 10, I'd like the last one to be stored in an archive page (link on the top left side labeled "Archives."

I'm pretty sure this sort of thing is possible, but on a 1-10 scale of difficulty, how would this turn out? I have a little bit of experience in C++ and now I'm gaining knowledge in PHP, just how much further would I have to go to accomplish this?

The joke depends on your time zone... Over here it is 10:09 first post, 11:10 for the second

Q: you are from florida, AFAIK you should be -6 hours from here. i.e. it should be 05:09 first post and 06:10 second. Still that funny? Did you setup the correct timezone in your profile? LOL...

I don't get this time-difference joke. And how it relates to my thread? Just curious.

Question

I'm having trouble on Page 7 at the link posted above on installing/configuring mySQL. ( http://www.sitepoint.com/article/525/7 ) It's saying to

Quote:
To set a root password for MySQL, type the following command in the bin directory of your MySQL installation (include the quotes):

mysqladmin -u root password "your new password"

So, I just ASSUMED this was in a RUN command for windows. BTW, I'm running WinXP. Everything else up to this point has gone good. But when I tried entering the commands and things it flashes a DOS prompt window and goes away. Can someone clarify this page for me? I can't set my password, or any other command on that page.

When I went to the bin directory and ran winmysqladmin.exe it brought up another window, I put in a username and password and it loaded in the system tray. The I tried typing the command quoted above and it brought up a DOS window saying "Password: " and I typed my password it, the PC beeped and the window went away. Good or bad? I'm assuming bad.

When dealing with command line programs, you should always open "cmd.exe" with start/run and start the program from there. the window won´t close then
