Any Good Books To Recommend?
Hi, I'm new to this forum and to website developing in general. I have a basic idea and am fairly good with Photoshop CS4, however I'm looking to develop my knowledge with regards to the web.
I was just wondering if anybody could recommend any good books to start me off? There seems to be so many out there, it's hard to distinguish the good from the bad. I'm looking for anything from using html, css and flash to explaining php aswell as how to enhance SEO. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks |

If you are not competent with HTML and CSS, you don't want to start with a book (I don't think it's worth the money). Google what you need. When you get a basic idea of what you are doing, come back here, and we'll point you to good reading material.

Your question should be like a good bug report: (1) It has the smallest number of steps to reproduce the problem you see (2) It tells us precisely what you expected to see and (3) It tells us what you saw and how it differed from what you expected. We need all three to help you. Want better answers? Tell us what you Googled for and what steps you took to answer your own question. |

There are a lot of ebooks on out there for downloading. ebookee.com and 4shared.com are good places to start, but 4shared has a more generous download policy. And after doing that, you may want to get yourself a LibraryThing.com account. It's a website where you can list/catalog your books. Free account can hold up to 200 books. I haven't listed my website development books yet, but you can see my library of C/C++/C# at librarything.com/catalog/programmer.jp. Then, to answer your question which book is the best, just look at the stats of books owned by the majority. You'll have an idea which books the owners want to show off. |

Oler1s: What? People cannot answer questions anymore? It just so happens that ebooks are available at the sites I've mentioned and they served me well by providing me with all the books I will ever need. Do I need to write some sort of disclaimer that I am not an owner of those sites and that I don't gain any points from mentioning them?
By the way, I just got here in this forum. And the easiest questions I can find are those about books. And for your information, I did Google my way into those sites when like this person, I was also looking for books. And now, I should ignore the very same sites I found? You're contradicting yourself. |

He is not contradicting himself. You are trying to get visitors to your site. The end.
In any case, I recommend Sitepoint Books It all really depends on what you're looking to get into. "Learning about the web" is such a broad subject.

Really, you should be learning about the Internet not just "the web". Hmmm .... Or maybe not, as it would probably take a bit of ramping up just to adequately distinguish the two terms. ... meh.

I just noticed this line:

In any case, I recommend The Ultimate HTML Reference The Ultimate CSS Reference The PHP Anthology: 101 Tips, Tricks, and Hacks No good SEO books I can recommend. Sorry for not giving links for the books, I have to leave for work in 10 minutes, and have no time.. |
