Smile Background Colour

I wish to change colour background of coins I photograph to see
what colour matches and enhances it.
At moment I trace round coin using Lasso, but as coins edges are not even, this can be very laborious and often not very successful.
I then open new canvas with different colours via Bucket and paste coin into it to compare.
I was told there is a easier way to change colour background,I am sure you open up coin image then go into Select----Color Range, and that is as far as I know.Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Peter.

You could also use a levels adjustment layer to contrast the bg well away from the coin and then use the magnetic lasso to do a clean select.

or use the majic wand to select the bg alone if its the same color throughout and then reverse the selection to grab the coin.. or just save the bg selection as an alpha channel and poke around with different colors on a different layer.
