Beginner Questions on DNS and nameservers

I did a search of the forums, but it appears that anybody asking a question already knew more then I did .

Anyway, I setup a webserver at a ip address temporaryly inorder to figure out how how to get a domain name linked to that address.

basicly, I am asking, how do I link my domain name with my ip?

I am probaby confusied here, but in the documentation they keep talking about having a ip for your nameserver. Doesn't register.com provide the nameserver?

basicly, I am trying to get hold of the costs of this, and I am wondering if I need this service
URL|2475872689|
with a domain name, or if I can somehow just point the domain name directily to the http server I setup here ...
URL

please note, I have not bought a domain name yet, I am trying to figure the cost right now.

fblue,

First of all, you need a nameserver which holds your domain and the ip address. Then you have to register the detail at InterNic (I think - sorry I only know about .com.au) or whereever you registered your domain.

Goodluck!
