burning cd

Hello I recently bought a cd burner with a program called CD-Maker. The reason i bought the thing is because my kids keep playing my games and end up with scrached cd's. I thought this way Ill have a back up. well I tried to burn a game (The Thing) and low and behold I can install the game from the new disk but i cant play it with the newly burnt cd (you need the disk in order to play). am I doing somthing wrong or is this cd protected in some way. I thought you could burn any cd or is ther a special way to do it. thank you
