C/C++/java etc for web devolpment?

Hello,

I currently am designing an administration site with mysql, php, apache, and RH linux. It relies only upon the server but I am thinking about making all of the system functions (not actual functions but the overall purpose/accomplishments) into an actual program that can be launched from the desktop and then connect to the database server and do all of the functions with a language other than php (unless I could access the php scripts from the c program).

I am a junior and will be attending college in about a year, so I have plenty of time to learn a little c/c++/java.

Anyways, I am looking for any good sites, books, or anything else that could possibly help me learn a full fledge prog language for developing a program that connect to the web, mysql database server etc.

Thanks for all info,
Kevin Buch

I'd suggest looking at perl/tk for this type of programming. You can create cross-platform applications that do everything you stated above, and they can have a good looking gui to boot.

Thanks for the reply.

However, the reason that I am looking into a c language is because I am planning on going into computer science and I would like to have a feel for the language.

When you stated that you can have a nice gui with perl, do you mean that the web pages can have a nice gui or the actual program itself.

I have read a book on perl (which was not a good one) but I have been really focusing on php as of now.

Thanks again,
Kevin Buch
