cd writer not reading cds

Hi

For nearly 1 week I have been searching the net for a solution to my problem. I have a Philips CDRW. When I put a cd in the drive lights up but doesnt do anything. Then after sometime the light goes off. Sometimes it hangs my PC too and when I restart the drive is not displayed in windows explorer. I dont have any idea why my drive is behaving so strangely. I didnt have this problem before. This only started when I tried to install Win XP but I aborted the installation because of compatibility issues with my web cam drivers. I have seen that many people have this same problem. Is it something to do with Win XP or some registry.

Im really frustrated and would appreciate a quick solution.

Thanks

Quickest solution is to go buy a new CDW.

Make sure you have up-to-date drivers. If you do, then you'll have to install XP, reinstall your current OS, or buy a new drive.

May seem simple, but when was the last time you cleaned the drive?

When we upgraded to XP all of our CD Burners quit working. We had to reinstall the burner software on all the machines and that solved the problem.

The problem is that the light on the drive doesnt come on at all when I switch on the pc. Does that mean the CDRW is bad. Should I go for a new one or is this only a temprorary problem.

have you opened up the case recently, or moved it and possibly shaken it heavily?

No. I just made sure that the cable is fixed properly. I even tried with another power cable but nothing happened. But today as I was working on my pc the light on the drive automatically came on but it still doesnt read any cds. When I put a cd in it just flashes the light for a long time and then goes off. I have read many cdr problem post on the net but still dont understand whats the reason.

Yes I even tried a cd cleaner but nothing happened. Normally when it reads a cd some sound of spinning comes, so I know that its reading the cd but now only the light comes on and its silent. Does this mean that the cd rom is bad.

I have a similar problem with my cdw Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I have found that if I re-install the driver it works fine for a couple of weeks.
Try MyComputer>Properties>Device Manager>choose your cdw>update driver

yeah, i thought it sounded like a driver problem from the start... and the reason it sometimes works and other times doesnt is probably its the generic driver included by xp and not customized for your drive- and most manafacturers dont make drivers for old products
