Count Spells on Excel Help

I am trying to work out if there is a way of counting blocks or spells within a spread sheet.

eg. I will have a block of 1's within a range, maybe 3 and then 2 and then 4 so this would = 3 spells, although a total count of 9. Not sure if office denotes these as a spell.

Any ideas. Help is appreciated
