This is kind of a broad topic- What specifically are you looking to do? Build your own, find someone else to do it, or just look into it?
If you have the technical expertise (meaning someone who can learn, or that already knows how to build websites) in-house, building your own can be economical and gives you maximum flexibility- If you need to make changes you can do it yourself. Contracting out with someone is the best option if you don't have the expertise and don't have the time to learn- Building websites, and doing it right, isn't easy. Taking a couple of Word documents, saving them as HTML and putting that somewhere is easy enough, but once you start really wanting to do something with your site, you outgrow that quickly. I'd suggest sitting down and thinking about what you want a website for, what your budget is, what your audience is, and then let these guide your decisions. I'd also suggest that you not throw out any "wacky" ideas in the early stages- technology should fit what you want to do, not the other way around. If something is important enough to do, there's a way to do it. If there isn't a way to do it within your budget, throw it out later. If you start with a small universe of possibilities, you're limiting yourself already. A general question gets a general answer! Hope this helps. Can you give more info about what you want to do with a website? |

I suggest you do a google search for "html tutorial" and see what pops up.
This site, www.devshed.com, has some good tutorials. www.webmonkey.com is great www.netscape.com had some good resources too, last time I checked it out. |

Little piece of advice - try to avoid WYSIWYG html editors. They will mess you and prevent you from getting any knowledge at all.

I know I'm a little late on this topic, but I recomend the HTMLgoodies. It's the best html site I've ever seen and will see I think. It has all the html content you will need and much more too. Javascript and Perl primers, snippets of ASP and a small overview on PHP. And two great newsletters. Unfortunently the original author is no longer responsible for the site but his work is still there and encouraged to be read.
