The motherboard has all the components to make various parts of your computer talk to each other appropriately. The chipset is generally the part of the motherboard responsible for connecting the processor, RAM, drives, and PCI bus all together. They aren't usually made by the same company, for example, "Asus" might make the motherboard, but the chipset might be "Intel" or "VIA." Depending on the make, model, and revision of your motherboard, the chipset may be different or updated. Some chipsets on various motherboards have been known to perform poorly or have incompatibilities with certain hardware.
