Question Having trouble trying to restart Apache

I am a complete newbie to Linux and the apache web server.
In the last week, I have been doing a lot of work with my httpd.conf file for Apache, but everytime I make a modification, I cannot restart Apache without having to reboot the computer. This has become very annoying. I have tried to restart it by typing kill -HUP 'cat /var/run/httpd.pid' in the shell prompt, but it keeps telling me that there is no such pid file. I have also tried to restart Apache by typing in /var/run/httpd.pid restart, but I have ended up with a similar problem.

Can anyone tell me what maybe causing the problem. Am I doing everything correctly? Incase you need to know, I am running Apache on Mandrake 8.2.

Thanks,

The safest way to restart is:

/path/to/apache/bin/apachectl graceful
