devide 1 million by average size of your page (in kbs)

say an average size of 100kb, not including the graphics say I have 5 graphics each for 50kb?
1GB/ [1million x 100]==?? what is the measurement unit? hit? |

where is your million from?
1GB/(avg page size)=avg hits that you can get on 1GB traffic... to your example: 1GB/(100kb+5*50kb)=2857 hits btw: 100kb for a html page with or without pics is definitely too much!! |

well, not really. say vbulletin page with 20 posts on it passed 100kb long time ago, and thats without graphics. |

Hi Al!
Agreed that this can happen in special cases. but in general i think it should not. thatīs also why the posts are split into several pages then ![]() (i have DSL and personally, i donīt care, but think of the people still having ancient tech like 56k modems. And if you pay your traffic per GB, you should definitively care.) |

depends on the country you want to host in (actually only important for the expected user->host speed) and what you consider "cheap".
what are you paying right now? there have URLs been posted that compare webhosts. look in the webhosting forum. anyone got one for us?? |

I don't believe in "unlimited" bandwidth is still very much $$$$. I use tera-byte.com they seem pretty cheap and reliable...

Yes and no and it depends. Depends on your idea of a 'very much $$$$', but if you really want some speed and quality then the best way would be to lease your own line > t1. Yes, it'll cost you 5k/month (for t3), but you will get what you paid for. |

at my place you can get a "flat rate" DSL with 128kb uplink for like $40 (if you already have ISDN). No pay per GB then anymore
yahoo.de offers 256Kb uplink (1MB downlink) for about $70.for our (professional) provider at our company, we pay like $8 for 1GB of traffic and $10-15 (donīt know exactly) for basic hosting (50MB, php, mysql, apache, all on linux and i can call this guy via telephone and tell him that i need a subdomain right now and i will have it till 6pm (this is when they restart their DNS servers) or if it is urgent even within a few minutes , new domains take 48hrs and are like $2 per month)could you give us some prices for comparison?

Hirsh, are you talking 128/256 kbits or kbytes? Personally I pay $50 for 1.5mbit down and 400kbit up, but of course it is not anywhere close to what you need to host.
About your provider, $8/gb is pretty high you know, I think market price now is somewhere ~$3. If you add $8 to $12 flat charge you get $20 monthly for for 50mb space with apache/php/mysql on linux and 1gb bandwidth, and I must say it is not the best deal nowadays. Telephone support is good, but I think most providers now are little more 'supportive' then they used to be so you can really live without live support. Domains for $2/m comes to 24 bucks a year, again godaddy.com takes to do it for $8/y and they do have pretty good services (at least I didn't have any problems with them) I am not criticizing your company or anything, but I just see that your prices are little bit higher then you can get. |

wow, your ressources look quite good to me then...
my upload speed was told in kbit/second. i am quite sure there is better offers, but i wanted some prices from your place to compare to ![]() seems like germany is still much too expensive on this market then... the best offer i found from advertisements was like $10 for hosting 20MB and $8/GB with 3GB included in the base price... but at our company we need to consider the liability too... we can sue a german provider for not providing the service promised, but we hardly can to an american / non-EU one ![]() here law does not permit them not to take liability for their services ![]() |

Thats wierd though, I thought Germany was the leading internet nation in europe, but I guess in US its still going to be cheaper - but I still like your laws on liability. |
