how to create .htaccess?

Hi,

I am trying to control access to a directory within my Apache webspace (username and password required).

I am aware that I need to play around with the .htaccess file...and thats about all I know. Are there any tutorials I can read on the web on how to configure/create this file?...

Any help appreciated.
