Where is it giving you this error message, when you try to change the name of the file on the server or when you try to change the name of the file on your local hard drive? Also, I notice that you still get the Forbidden error when trying to access your website...

Error
I was getting the error when I tried to re-name my file on my pc. I fixed that though, I deleted that website and started from scratch. I think the problem started because after I created my website the first time, I clicked "save as" and then I named it Abra Cadabra Services, that is where I screwed up. I should have just clicked "save" and it would have been saved with the name "index.html"
I am still getting the FORBIDDEN message. The web hosting people are going to delete this account and re-create a new one. They said that the new account will be ready next week sometime because they don't do this on the week-end. In the mean time I will just play around with my web page and fix it up. I did borrow Macromedia FX from a friend of mine and tried it out. Because I've never used it I don't readily see the differences between that and FrontPage. I want a real flashy website! It's for a landscaping business. Thanks for all your help! |

I will recommend you rush to find another hosting company as that is considered bad business practice in this trade. Quote:
FrontPage should be fine, BUT, Macromedia DW MX is the cream of the crop when is comes to WYSIWYG editing. If you have access to that, learn its features and work with it. The difference between the two is like the difference between a Chicken Wing and a New York Strip Steak, much much more satisfying.....

Ermmm... yea, I should have said something so it's a good thing Joe popped in to mention it - get a new provider. They have your configuration file set up wrong, that's all - I highly doubt there's a good reason to delete the account. Could be as simple as switching this:
Code:
Order allow,deny to this: Code:
Order deny, allow within a plain old text file... deleting the account is NOT good. By flip flopping those two little words in the configuration file on my PC, I can make it so that either everyone on the Internet who knows my current IP address can access my PC while it's connected, or only I (me, sitting at my own computer) can access my PC while it's connected. |

One thing
Having briefly checked over this conversation, one thing which hasn't been mentioned is where you are actually trying to upload the file to.
For example, are you uploading index.html to something like users/www/ . That would exlain maybe why you are getting "forbidden message" - it might be that there is nothing in this directory - thus you are not allowed to browse it.

Hi,
I don't think you should be uploading to a temp directory! Why are you uploading them there? With regards to Quote:
as far as I am aware , I am No expert! , the tmp directory is for uploading files temporarily, ie. when you are about to send them through e-mail for example. I don't think you should store anything permenantly there, thus called "temp". I also know nothing about frontpage, but a quick way would be to upload a simple html page made in notepad for example and ftp to the site to see if it works. Code:
<html> <head> <title>Test</title> </head> <body> <h1>Testing</h1> </body> </html> save as index.html and see what happens. I really think the default directory would be something like I qouted before. Br Jamie |

I figured it out!
They never enabled the FronPage Extensions! .They said it will take 24 hours to configure and then I should be up and running!
YaaHOOO! Finially, this has only set me back 100+ hours. Thanks for all your help, I'm sure I will be back with more problems. I did pick up some really good books: Apache Server Unleashed and Apache Server 2.0. They really seem to be helping! Take Care, Angie ~Lost In Space~ ![]() |

Umm, I hate to burst your bubble, but I think you really need to look into an alternative host. I find it somewhat hard to swallow that missing FP extensions are the problem here. Make sure that you know what directory you're supposed to upload files to (they need to tell you that) and that's where you're putting them. As for taking 24 hours, that's ridiculous. We had the extensions set up at work for our company intranet in one morning.
