Installing Win98 over Win2K server
Hi,
This is my first post I was recently given an old PC which has Win2K Server installed on it. It takes really long to boot and things like antivirus programs are really expensive for the Server editions. I have been using it for a while, but I dont need any of the stuff Win2k Server offers really. Can I install Win98SE over Win2K Server or do I need to format the drive or anything? If I can simply install Win98SE, will it result in any file system incompatibily for any of the data I have on the machine? Any help you can give me will be really appreciated. I know very little about Win2K server. Thanks. |

I'm pretty sure if you try to install Win98, you will get a message something to the effect of "your current version of windows is newer than the one you're trying to install" and it won't let you continue the installation. Looks like you're gonna have to format your hard drive and install Win 98 from scratch. Which is usually the best way to install a new Windows OS anyways.

Not only would you not be able to install it over win2k.
But, you may want to consider keeping win2k being that it is a much better operating system |

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll take your advice and stick with with the server OS for now. It takes a long time to boot though - what services can I turn off to try and speed it up? I have already removed IIS. the network config is simply this machine and one client machine running Win 98SE. I have a DSL box connected to a router and both this machine and the client are also connected to the router.
Thanks |
