Have you looked at all the different discussion about this which already exists?
You have any programming experience?
What kind of application do you want to make? Web? Desktop? Mobile?
Web: I would say .NET with ASP and C# is easier to start with than Java (JSP).
Desktop: If you have to work on Linux I would pick Java.
Mobile: Android use Java , Windows use (obviously) .NET

Then I think the best you can do is to look up some starting tutorials for both language and try them out.
For Java you can download NetBeans or Eclipse, of which both have a download bundle including the JDK.
For C# (.NET) you can download Microsoft Visual Studio Express.
Personally, I started with Java in School class, but this was before .NET got its big entrance.

In my opinion you need to go with Java First and then the C# because Java language let you understand OOPs concepts at first place which helps a lot in learning Java, C# language etc. In my b.tech course I followed this sequence of learning languages C, C++, Java, .NET.Hope it helps.

I would say C#. Itís much simpler than Java. I took an online course on C# from Microsoft Virtual Academy and it was really helpful. The site has comprehensive information on C# and all their courses are designed by the industryís leading experts. And you can take all of the courses on their website for free.
