laymens terms: what is ldap?
using many of the apps i use for linux, there is always the option of using enabling/using ldap.
whoever looking up what ldap exactly is i'm getting technical info overload. in what situation would one want to use ldap? thanks |

The closest thing I can relate LDAP to is a relational database system. It is designed differently so that retrieving data from them is extremely fast, but inserting data is slow. So it's good for resources that don't get updated frequently, but get a lot of information retrieved from them.

"lightweight directory access protocol" is basically a way to provide automated directory (think "contact list" or "phone email directory") services to remote clients. A number of email clients provide LDAP integration.
