local host - can i set up an email server?

hey guys,

i've just set up apache and php on my test box, was just wondering how i could go about setting up a test email server for sending emails via localhost? anyone got any tips, the solution is probably staring me right in the face but i figure why not just ask someone who has done it before. i downloaded agsmail from www.argsoft.com, it's a freeware email server but i don't know if i am headed in the right directon. help would be appreciated

IMO, setting up mail server on windows box for developing is just not worth the hassle. Why can't you use remote mail server?

I had the same problem a while ago. I had just made a move and was waiting for my DSL service to be connected, so I had some free time, and decided to do a little home networking.

My best advice to you is to get another computer. Go to a garage or yard sale and pick up a used 266-300MHz Intel machine. Buy two NIC's, some CAT5 cable and load Linux on the worse of the two machines (linux comes with httpd and smtp servers as well as PHP and MySQL). **Remember to install WINE** Now your Linux machine can function as a Network File Server, httpd Server and an e-mail server.

This is good for two purposes. You are working with another OS besides Windows or the MacOS. Second you can now test and modify your system to fit your needs.
