Question

Hello world-

I've been downloading MP3s on my PC at work (don't tell the boss!) and wanted to transfer those files onto my Mac laptop. I transfered the files via an internal ftp and even zipped them (I heard this helps) and nothing seems to fix this problem. My Powerbook just can not recognize the files as MP3s. How I can make these files playable on my Mac?! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

What is most likely happening, is that the type/creator attributes are not being properly set and you are trying to double-click on them or use a program that filters via that critera. Ensure the files end in .mp3 and that you have QuickTime 4 or 5 installed on the Mac and try opening them in QuickTime Player. What happens when you do that?

Thumbs up

I didn't think Macs need the extension name (.mp3) to work but it DID!!!! When I transfered the files over originally, all of the names go chopped off along with their extensions.

I still suspect that I'll have to save the files within the Quicktime program to make the files recognizable by other program like Toast (is this true?), but to do that, I'll need to fork out $30 for Quicktime Pro

Thanks Michael.

They don't need the extension, but if you have it, QuickTime is smart enough to overlook the type/creator attribute. If you're comfortable monkeying around a computer, you can download a program called ResEdit and modify that attribute of the files yourself.
