Whatsup forum members, just wanted to say hi, before I post my question. Ok, so I wanted to get into programming a while back, and I will hopefully be taking a programming class this upcoming year, but Im sure it is something really basic that I have never heard of (a language called Scheme???). So about half a year back I started reading this thick book on C++, it's called Sam's Teach Yourself C++ Fourth Edition, and I guess I started kinda understanding C++, and I just wanted to know if this is the right path for me to take(language to learn) for future possible job opportunities, and mainly game development, etc. Basically what I want to know is whether knowing C++ opens many job opportunities, or should I be learning something else?? Also, this is my first language(html don't count), but I am determined to learn it, since I have read numerous posts about everything being much easier to learn if you start with a hard one. So can any of you really experienced programmers give me some good advice on the matter?? Any other language suggestions?? Thanks.

For app development, C++ and Java are the way to go, and once you learn one well you can pick up the other relatively easily.
No telling what the job market will be like and such, but mastery of those languages (and keep going on to others- python, perl, etc) will give you the basic skill set you'll need. Good luck

it might be an idea to get some basic knowledge of Visual basic or something similar, just to get used to object oriented programming....thats my two cents

Visual Basic can hardly be called 'Object Orientated'. If you are going to use C++ and Java then learning VB will just confuse you since its a totally different code structure.
Java is the best language to learn to get the general knowledge of Object Orientated coding. |

C and C++ are apparently widely-used for games programming.

I agree, VB can hardly be considered programming period. As much as I love C++, Java is probably better to learn first, that way you don't get confused and scared by pointers and such. |
