so, have you read the devshed article already? if you dont have any previous programming experience, i strongly recommend that you use the php/mysql combo. there are a lot of host for you to choose from. plus, if you have any problem with your scripts, php has a lot of easy tutorials and lessons, not to mention the great community here at devshed who can help out.

I've been reading the tutorials and, it seems that the more I read the less I understand. I've downloaded mysql and php. But after I installed and ran mysql, the program window opened (I just wanted to see what it looked like). I later rebooted and when I did so, the PC wouldn't boot...just got to a black screen and nothing else. Luckily I use Second Chance and got back in (I'm using Win98se by the way).

Soooooo, first question. Do I actually have to run mysql on my machine? The site I'm trying to put together will be hosted by a remote host and they do accomodate mysql databases and PHP. Or is running it on my machine just for testing purposes and all I have to learn is PHP so I can (it says here in the the brochure) just design the database and test it on the host after uploading the necessary files.

I have no idea why I couldn't reboot after loading and then closing mysql.
