Exclamation OKAY, Microsoft doesn't support Java!!! Need site!

Happy Labor Day!

I'm still fighting with my HP Officejet 7110 all-in-one printer, that I just purchased from Best Buy, and the software won't load entirely because it says I don't have Java Virtual Machine.

I've discovered that I (think) I just missed the last available Microsoft download of Java Virtual Machine by about two weeks. I've downloaded Java last night from two different sources, Java.com and Red Dog's link java.sun.com, AND the one I'm going to try right NOW at http://www.apycom.com/indexj.html which was busy all last night, MAY solve the error message that I keep getting whenever I try to re-install my HP printer software: "Unable to start the application--the Java Virtual Machine cannot be loaded. Class not registered." Am I right that Microsoft no longer supports or provides Java downloads due to a lawsuit? How can I tell if my pc has JVM ON it, other than doing a "search," because oftentimes my search will turn up with the file NAME, but the file is empty (because I stupidly deleted it!) So, even though I may find it through a "search", my HP officejet installation software still tells me I DON'T have it!

#1 If anyone can solve my difficulty in getting my NEW HP printer up and running today, I would be eternally grateful!

#2 I'm STILL longing for someone to do some charity work - ANYONE OUT THERE WILLING TO BE A MENTOR? How difficult could it be for one of you technical experts out there to be available for one-on-one e-mails or Instant Messages to answer a few technical questions now and then?

#3 I USED to work with engineers of all disciplines which was WONDERFUL, because they'd help me with questions. Now, I'm at home and have to rely on the internet to find a kind soul to help me.

Just pretend there's a telethon going on to help poor lil' me! Anyone care to donate some TIME? Thanks in advance!

Cant you just go to java.com and get the java vm? Its a simple download and install. Try it, then see if you still get the error. As for the mentor, just post your questions in the forums. You'll get the expertise of more than one person.

Smile I'm duplicating a post only to complete and close this link

I apologize that Karsh44 had to reply to THIS post, when late last night (about 3:30am) I finally FIXED my printer installation problem, and posted it just about EVERYWHERE I could (so according to the rules - others could learn from what I did, as well as to complete the inquiry and close out the subject). THIS was probably the only ONE place I didn't post my conclusion, probably because I hadn't received a reply to this post, I figured it was a dead question. Anyway, I'll re-post what I sent out last night and if you moderators know how to fix my duplications (I guess because I should have just had ONE post discussing this to BEGIN with), you can delete and edit at will!!!!
=============================================

To the moderators: If this is unneccesary to post my solution in more than ONE place within the same forum, then just use my statement as follows:

Please see my first post regarding this problem, and my final solution! It's mostly guesswork and checking out everything, but my printer is finally working - and I'm not sure why!

To read the complete history of how it wound up working tonight, please read the following text which I originally posted at my first post's location:

I used all of the suggestions from everyone in all of the forums, my hundreds of dollars worth of computer books, searching the web for more Java, HP officejet and XP compatibility issues, and more items too numerous to mention!

In the meantime, I received the following NEW error messages which I ALSO had to figure out:

"Unable to initialize. A problem occured initializing the device manager."

THEN, I got a red, frightening Norton window saying:

"Alert: Malicious script detected." The Object was "FileSystem Object" and the Activity was "GetSpecialFolder." I was told my computer was halted and needs to do something about this script. The FILE was called HelpCtr.exe!!! My option was to STOP the script, but I would have preferred to quarantine it, but I STILL don't know what to do about THAT!! So, that's another question for someone... I read up on my script blocking, and reaffirmed that I DO have it checked to block scripts, but I still wonder what it is all about.

Then I went into my Norton's System Information and checked everything out, and then "My Computer" and "View System Information." When I got to the "Hardware" tab, I clicked on the "Device Manager" button, and looked for the "Imaging Devices" icon which I then clicked on. FOR SOME REASON, my software installation CD then started back up and it attempted to finish installing the remaining software that it said it would do HOURS ago before I got the Java Virtual Machine error message!

Oh, somewhere in there, I also went into my Control Panel, to the Printer section, and decided to click on "Add a Printer." I think it was THEN that everything began to run and I finally got the window stating "Completing the Add Printer Wizard!" I had ONE MORE error message about something, but after checking several sites regarding XP compatibility and getting conflicting answers, except from one place in HP's site, I bravely tried to print a page, and although I had TWO icons for the HP officejet, and the FIRST one didn't work, I tried the second one, made it my default printer, and it WORKED! HALLELUIA!

I don't know exactly what I did, but it's now working, and I wanted to report to each of the forums to which I'd posted how I MAY have managed to get it to work - although there are still a number of unanswered questions. (At this point, I have so much stuff to complete before I can go to bed, I don't care if little ELVES managed to fix it for me!)

Whew! Thank you everyone - it's been an interesting four days of hell to go through, but I have the satisfaction of salvaging my printer and not having to go through the confrontation with where I purchased the unit. Thanks again!

To Karsh44 regarding my Java solution

I received a reply from a very nice person at Java just this afternoon. I'm assuming that he would have no problem with me passing along his e-mail verbatim in order to help OTHERS receive Java as well (as it obviously would be in his interest as well). So, I haven't had time to follow the instructions and ensure that I have a complete working program of Java Virtual Macine yet, but I will be doing so shortly. At any rate, here's his full e-mail minus the salutations:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-mail from Ken.Chen@Sun.COM <Ken.Chen@Sun.COM> that I received Tuesday, September 02, 2003 1:45 PM:

Thank you very much for your interest in Java. Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). With JRE, you are able to run Java applications and Java applets. Please try downloading the JRE manually from following site:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

When prompted, please choose "Save" in the download dialog box, and save the download package in a convenient place (e.g. save on the desktop). Do NOT choose to "Open". Then double click on the downloaded installation file to start the installation process. When asked to remove any previous Java installation, please click yes.

After you successfully install the Sun Java Plug-in, you will see a coffee cup icon in your Windows Control Panel for the plug-in.

Make sure your Web browser (Internet Explorer) is set to use your new plug-in. You can make sure the Sun Java Plug-in is enabled through the Web browser. Go to Tools, then Internet Options. Under the Advanced Tab, make sure the checkbox for the Sun Java Plug-in is checked (enabled).

Also check under the Security Tab in Internet Options, by clicking the Custom Level button. Scroll down to Scripting, and make sure that Java is enabled inside the Security Tab.

Do you have a firewall program running on your computer or on your router?
Please read this webpage for help: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/proxy_setup.jsp.

Please go to Control Panel, and click on the Java Plug-in icon. In the Java Plug-in Control Panel, click on Proxies, and check the box: Use Browser Settings. If this does not help, then you can manually type in the IP address and port of the proxy in the fields below.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further help. Thank you very much for contacting Sun Microsystems.

Regards,
Ken
