PHP, ASP, JSP, ColdFusion, Etc

Hello,
I'm looking for the collective wisdom of all you folks. I'm a small time database developer that sees the handwriting on the wall. I need to begin the learning process to be able to create web enabled database applications. Don't want to be stuck in the windows world. What are your thoughts as to the best language to go with. I will never be building large mega hits sites, just small business type sites.

Thanks
Jim C

Well, since you say you wont build big applications then you dont really need java or c, asp is probably aight (though I haven't worked with it for a long time), but my recommendation would be - learn php. It will get you covered on most areas of web development. And yeah, cold fusion is that last thing you want to master, creaters of cf were probably joking when called it a programming language :/

Smile PHP v CF

Just getting into PHP myself (as of last weekend) but have had some experience of Cold Fusion too. Found CF very easy to use as it is essentially tag based (much like HTML) whereas PHP seems more 'programming' oriented.

CF is v. expensive though so I would agree with others who have said use PHP. Seems to be able to do what I want it to do and should certainly be able to do what CF can do too.

Hope this helps.
