Question What programming language to use?

    Hey,
as you can probably see im very new to programming.
I have however self learned the basic's of php, html to a professional extent, and mysql to a very basic extent.

Now I think it is time for me to switch gears....
I want to get into more computer programming and have already done some research on it...

I would like to know: if I were to create a GUI program that allows you to view your pc in a different way, where should I get started??? say, if I double click a word file on this program, I want it to be able to link microsoft office and start it up. I would like for this to work with other files too, such as videos with video player etc.

Here is a map that i have created of how it would show on the screen:

    ---Welcom Mr. #######---
    -Select Hard drive:
(Program displays 6 diferent hard drives of my machine...)
    <Hard drive one sellected>
<displays files and menu on side>
    -Would you like to:
    ---Create a Project
    ---Search a File
    ---Browse Drive
    ---Download Files
    ---etc....

I hope i did a very thorough job of explaining this,
and I hope you guys understand my question and get me started on this bad boy...

If you're interested in programming applications that integrate closely with windows you'll probably want to look into C# or c++.

Thank you for your reply, btw loved ur tut on secure login system with php....

I was thinking C# because many people say it is not very difficult to learn.
    Another question i have:
I remember there used to be a programm on windows xp that speaks out waht you type in,
would it be possible to integrate such a programm, and make the pc respond to what you say???
(I know that this will require more than basic knowledge, need to get started somewhere...) keep in mind that i would keep this as a long term project....

Windows has text to speech APIs that I suspect you can access from a Windows program.

Making the computer respond to what the user says would require a speech to text type API. Windows 7 has that capability, but I don't know what the APIs are like.

    Thanks for the info!!!
    One more thing,
This won't conflict with C#, right?
I don't want to find out later when im half done that the language doesn't work with speech programs...

    Thanks again...

    C# Speech

C# and .NET 3.5/4 has access to every feature of Windows. The .NET API is huge.

When we plug in speakers they normally work straight-away don't they? If not, then it's usually an issue with the Windows settings.

But, of course, that page is just one of many on the interweb.

Unless you have access to (or money for!!) Visual Studio then there is always VS Express. I would install it late at night, when it's quiet

Getting Visual Studio in about an hour or two...
Apperently, I get microsoft programs for free

    I quickly research on google,
there is a "Speech to Text"
    and a "Text to Speech"
    function in C#(good for me)

I think you guys now kind of get the idea of what im trying to do....
if you don't: I'm trying to create a program that executes my commands(said by voice) and then tells me the outcome without even looking at the screen...

I know this is what many other people are working on atm, but I intend for this program to be for my own use...

Thanks for the referal of visual studios, I understand it is some type of coding program that helps you code the programs to your wishes, correct me if i'm wrong...

That sounds more like a blog than a subject for a forum . But you can certainly post questions at various points (perhaps after the first three months ).

Added: There is a specific (sub) forum for C/C# questions.
