redhat 7.3 display probz
first of all.... wassup devshed people...
so- i dunno where else to post a question like this so ill put it here... anyway.. i got an old machine from a buddy and decided to try out some linux... installed redhat 7.3 just fine in graphical mode.. the problem is this: when kde loads, my monitor goes berserk. its a viewsonic viewpanel va800 if that helps anyone... if i plug the cable into a crt monitor- all is well, i just cant get the graphics work in kde... i talked to viewsonic customer support and they said that they offer no help for linux-based os's (which is retarded, no?) i was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows of a workaround or how i can switch to gnome (just to review-- i can see text-based output on the lcd monitor such as the bios check and the load process that linux goes through... it is only when the graphical login screen should come up that everything goes haywire) thanks in advance for any help |

Did you run through all of your Configure X options when you installed? I haven't installed RH 7.3 yet, but typically when you run install you get the opportunity to configure the X environment before install begins. If you did, do you remember the settings you used?
Incidentally, there's both a Linux forum, and, if you're a beginner and feel it goes there, a Beginner's forum (for example, I post Windows related problems / questions to beginner's because I'm not very well attuned to the win32 systems). |

Be VERY careful plugging your flat panel monitor into an improperly configured X server. . . I've seen CRTs get fried from this.
The issue here is that you have to set your horizontal and vertical refresh rates in the XF86Config (or XF86Config-4, because you're probably use XFree86 4) config file properly or your monitor will get fried. Do a google search, someone else has probably encountered this and fixed it already. You could also try running "Xconfigurator," paying close attention to the video card and monitor choices. Redhat usually auto-detects you monitor properly during the install and takes care of tweaking XFree86 for you, but apparently in this case it didn't get it right. |
