Stupid WinNT Process.. How Do I Control Them?
I brought down a production server last Friday. Amusingly, it was WinNT, so that should explain a lot. What I want to know is... if I'm sitting at a workstation, and I start a process on server "a", how do I kill that process if it gets out of hand? The process was a CGI script that accidentally tried to return the same page twice and couldn't die. I tested it 6 time, so wound up with 6 copies running which sucked up all the resources eventually.
Are there any commands to issue from the command line to see what processes are running or to kill them? I really don't know what sort of rights I have to this server. I'm kept totally clueless about it for the most part, and I know little to nothing about Windoze NT... so I'm really lost here. I don't want to have to call up the admin every time I suspect an out of control process... ![]() |

Do control+alt+delete and select task list and in that window choose the Processes tab, select what's running and End Process
I guess that's what you are talking about... |

Alas... the process is running on server "A", spawned off IIS, and I'm sitting at a station elsewhere executing it from a browser on the intranet....

Well if you don't have access to the server I really don't think you'll beable to get a process list, although I'm pretty sure there are command lines to get a process list in NT and maybe even kill processes.

You could setup vnc to run on the server, then you could get at it from your workstation.

Eh heh... good idea but (there's always a "but"
) only admins are allowed to run VNC at work... I've put in a request to have a server (preferrably Apache) installed locally on my box so that I can do all the testing there. I have a meeting to discuss the request with one of the Network Admins tomorrow afternoon. The only problem is, these are all Windows folks, I believe, and they don't really seem to like installing things they won't be able to support (I doubt anyone there knows how to run Apache) so I'm hoping they don't try to pass of PWS on me instead of Apache because of the general preference toward M$. ![]() |

Eh... I think it's stupid not to give developers control over their own boxes, anyway. If they fsck it up, let them fix it. It's their productivity that just go destroyed. Counter this with how much more productive you could be if you weren't crashing production servers trying to find a bug in your program
