TCP/IP application communication

hi, i am just learning java/servers and i'm starting a project for uni where i have to communicate and transfer data from a remote network monitor to a remote location over tcp/ip.

i want to set up a server (probably apache) to transfer the data files, so my question is does anybody know of the best method to communicate between the probe and the server, and to transfer it over tcp/ip.

do i need to set up sockets to transfer the data file?
