that is a pretty broad topic, so my suggestion to you would be to get yourself a copy of linux or freebsd and install it. The best way to learn this is to work with it hands on. Topics such as vim and grep will not make very much sense unless you have the tools available to you.

This will help you get linux installed, and also leave you with a grasp of what linux is...

My first linux book that made any sense to me was "linux for dummies" I found it very very helpful.

Don't be afraid to jump right into this, it will be much more difficult at first than microsoft, but you will, in the long run, appreciate the capabilities of a 'nix

Some site I would suggest to you are....

http://internet.com/sections/linux.html
http://www.linuxgazette.com/
http://www.linuxdoc.org/
http://www.portalux.com/informations/
http://linuxnewbie.org/
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/

These sites may not always have the information that you need but they should lead you in the right direction.

(BTW a good tut on vim is http://www.linux-mag.com/2001-02/newbies_01.html and a good place to start on grep is http://www.esmerel.com/wagons/rob/grep.html or http://www.acm.vt.edu/~clint/voices/grepdoc.htm.)

Good luck...
