What should I learn?
Hello all.
I've just finished a higher national diploma in multimedia (web design/cd-rom production)and i've decided that I don't particulaly want to do that for the rest of my life. After doing some basic programming for the web (html, actionscript, lingo and javascript) I decided that I quite enjoy programming, and would like to get into more computing programmes (c++, VB, delphi, etc) and I would be very grateful if anyone could give me advice which I should start learning. I was thinking c++ as i've heard that it's the most difficult to learn, and after that it should be easier to pick up the rest? Also if anyone could tell me the best way to learn? (books, web, etc) I am also interested in learning about servers, which I know nothing about yet. So any info on that would be appreciated. I have got about 2 years to learn in my spare time, if thats enough? Sorry if this seems vague, but I dont have a clue about this stuff Thanks -Reebo- ![]() |

Well, the best languages to learn all depends on what you plan on doing. There are a multitude of them out there that are excellent for different situations. C/C++ is excellent for applications and low-level interaction with hardware. Perl is also an excellent multipurpose language. PHP, JSP and ASP are use solely for web scripting and are all popular. I would recommend that you pick one or two and learn them forwards and backwards and then move on to others there.
As far as the best way to learn, this can only be answered by yourself. Some people only learn well in the classroom, others can read it and go, still others learn from examples from other people. Only you know what category you fall into. If you have a couple of years then go to college and take the CS option that you want. Most schools have 2 or 3 different options. |

I would go back to college, but after 2 years of bieng poor on my last uni course, which I just finished, I have to go out and get a job now.
I can learn from books quite well, but I dont want to waste money on the wrong one. I kind of wish I had done a computing course in the first place now! As for what i'm interested in, I would have to say game development would be the most interesting to me. |

Then you need to focus on C/C++. I believe there has been a discussion in the C/C++ forum discussion good books/references for the language.

Well, that goes to c and java too. IMO, what one should learn is c for unix, c++ for windows, perl for general scripting, php for web and java for resume.

javascript, for client side
asp, for clients who require it python, just to show off xml, to be up with the times xslt, to go with xml jscript, because otherwise you'll get confused when someone shows you something strange that they call 'javascript' chinese, because soon 90% of the web will be in chinese french, because that'll be the other 9.9% picking your nose and flicking it, cos that's all you'll have left when programming becomes uncomplicated. ![]() |
