ASP is a pretty powerful server-side scripting language that uses VBScript to generate dynamic webpages. It can be used to create anything from e-commerce sites to bulletin boards. It requires a server running MS Windows (NT or 2k) and IIS. There is a Linux-based alternative called Chili-Soft, but it can be expensive.

Personally, I prefer the open-source alternative of PHP. It has many of the same features but is more powerful. And it's also free!

There also is another alternative to ChilliSoft Asp called Apache::Asp (and it's free too). This uses mod_perl and perferably an installation of Apache which is not set up using an RPM. Try doing a search on the Apache website for more details:

I am also struggling with the ASP vs. PHP dilemma. Can you offer a good starting point for PHP? Website, book, or otherwise?

Thumbs down ASP and NT Servers

Hi,

I really wouldn't want to use ASP for any project the had to be reliable. In my experience NT servers are in the habit fo falling down quite a lot and need constant supervision.

It's really horses for courses... you got a VB background then your probably going to take to ASP quite quickly. If you've any experience of class based langauges then PHP will seem like second nature.

I agree with the choice of php over asp. If anything, for the simple facts that it is free, it is (on a *NIX machine) fast and RELIABLE, and it is so well documented that I haven't come across a problem yet that I couldn't find a tutorial on or an execllent explanation in the online manual http://php.net/manual. For anyone but a hardcore VB programmer I would recommend php.

Wink

I just posted this URL in another thread but it seems to apply here as well.

Hope this helps a little with the cons.
