perl is here to stay. java is here to stay. it really depends on what you like and what you want to do. with java, you'll be heading toward software engineering. with perl, you can do web development or systems engineering, or jump to php and other middleware type languages. basically, the more you learn the better.

personally, i like being closer to the front than the back, so i've been working on languages closer to the browser: php, dhtml, css, flash actionscript.

it's up to you: databases are here to stay too, so you could start learning SQL. maybe a good project would be a php/mySQL site, with CSS and maybe some flash...

just keep your eyes open, and keep learning and asking question.

    best wishes,
    darwin

You might want to think about what you want to do in the future.

If you like working with Microsoft technologies, then go start to learn ASP and MSSQL...

Else I would suggest going with the PHP/MySQL suggestion. Many businesses and people use PHP cause it is simple to learn, and free! Plus the amount of resources out there for PHP is amazing, you won't ever have any trouble asking for help!
