adduser problem

I am running 4.6-STABLE, and I went to create a new user using the adduser utility, but for some reason, after it asks "use passwords?", and I say "y", it proceeds to asking me for the username again, BUT, when I type it in, the next line is the same exact question. It seems to be stuck in a loop, however, if I put anything other than the initial username, it gives me a match error. It never progresses beyond that question, and I have to kill the script.

Thats one problem; the second one has to do with setting a home directory. I decided to use vipw to directly edit the user file, and I did this successfully, however whenever I log in (ftp, ssh, etc) whichever program I use doesn't extract the home directory from the profile -- even though chpass and vipw both show that a home directory is specified.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Brett

Okay, I figured out the last problem (no home dir found) -- I changed the permissions on /home to test something, and forgot to change it back.

I did try the adduser script after fixing the permissions on the /home dir, but it still didn't work.

TIA,
Brett
