BSD Random DNS Failures
I have a BSD box and a WinXP box on my network right now. The BSD box is handling firewall/nat for the both of them and has sshd bound to the in-facing NIC on 192.168.10.1 . There are three NICs involved here:
sis0 faces out and is assigned via dhcp xl0 faces in and has sshd bound to it The winxp interface is just there to work with the other box. Otherwise, nothing remarkable that I can think to point out. It all works well except for one thing: every 45 minutes to an hour, DNS resolutions slow to a crawl - so bad that they always time out on the Windows box. Lookups work on the BSD box, but they're significantly delayed. Pinging external IPs from either system works, it's just DNS that has a problem. I set the firewall type to "open", "simple", "client" - nothing. The problem recurs. No abnormal traffic that I can see in either tcpdump or ethereal when this occurs. What next? Thanks, Chris |

Are you running your own DNS resolver here (BIND? dnscache?) or do you have an external name resolver set up for both machines.

Both machines are using the ISPs DNS server.

Nyah - never mind. I just started running my own cache instead and made a little shell script to write out the proper resolv.conf file after DHCP trashes it. Solved that problem!
