Configure FreeBSD 4.8

Hi, I just installed FreeBSD 4.8 (for the first time) and got some problems.

First, when I do a "startx" at commmand line, it says "screen not found"
Second, I was expecting a graphical interface from FreeBSD, not a command window. How do I configure this?

So how do I solve these, please help me. I'm ralatively new to BSD so any help would be really appreciated.

Well X doesnt work without being configured first. Have you read the FreeBSD handbook? XFree86 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.IS...k/x-config.html

FreeBSD Handbook http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.IS...books/handbook/

Also FreeBSD is a Unix system, its just the Kernel. The graphical display is provided via programs like X Windows.

Thanks for pointing me there, I got the KDE up. The interface is pretty nice, I love it.

Now how do I configure my pc to connect to the Internet? I have ADSL and I can't find any guide in the BSD handbook on how to connect to the Internet. Could you help me? Thanks.

Much of it depends on your DSL provider, most of whom (or so I've heard) use PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet). In that case, you can check the handbook, specifically the PPP section. You may also need to check the Advanced Networking section for DHCP, w/c most broadband providers use to assign IP addresses and gateways to client stations.

Regards.
