cvsup question -- *,v files

I am want to install kde3 from /usr/ports/x11/kde, but the only thing in the dir are the *,v files.

How do I get their real life corresponding files?

I am running 4.5 STABLE

No such dir for me. For kde3 it should be /usr/ports/x11/kde3

It appears that you misconfigured your supfile like missing the *default delete use-rel-suffix so why don't you show us yours?

BTW, kde3 is not usable at this moment, it's suggested that you wait another 2 months.

Should it be deleting all of the *,v files?

Like what I guessed, you misconfigured your supfile with a missing tag and defined use-rel-suffix twice.

Here's my /usr/local/etc/cvsup/ports-supfile:

*default host=cvsup8.FreeBSD.org
*default base=/usr
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=.
*default delete use-rel-suffix
*default compress
ports-all

And /usr/local/etc/cvsup/src-supfile:

*default host=cvsup8.FreeBSD.org
*default base=/usr
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_4
*default delete use-rel-suffix
*default compress
src-all

Thanks, I'll fix it. I went and deleted all the *,v files, and not, magically (not really), all my ports work..I realized that the patch-aa,v files were being used as patches also, and that was causing mucho problemos...

I took your advice and installed kde2, but I installed only kdelibs2 and kdebase2 for the moment. I figured from what I have read that the rest is just the apps, and right now I want just the desktop...no koffice, konquerer, etc.

What you should do (just to be safe) is to rm -rf your /usr/sup/ports-all/checkouts.cvs:. file and perhaps /usr/ports (except /usr/ports/distfiles) if you have a fast Internet connection, then cvsup your ports tree again from scratch. Just because your ports tree is currently out of sync (without /usr/ports/x11/kde3 dir).

Just curious, but what do you have in your /usr/sup/refuse file?

In other words, what ports are non-essential? I have all the language based one refused as well as stuff I know I will not use like:
cad
games
biology
..etc

BTW this refuse file is required in NetBSD, without it your /usr/pkgsrc/distfiles is gone after a sup.

Are you having disk space problem? If not just don't add anything else to that refuse file. You'd never know (without looking) if a port requires something in, like japanese directory.

No disk space is not an issue, but I would prefer not to waste it...I see what you are saying about dependent programs being in obscure directories like "japanese", but I figure that if I do happen to need something from there, I can just modify the refuse file to allow it, then run cvsup...

KDE 3.0 is *plenty* useable. In fact, it's faster than KDE 2.2.2 on my Pentium-II 333MHz / 80 MB RAM box.

If you don't speak any of the various languages, then add them to your refuse file. What's the point in having something sitting on your disk that you won't ever use??

If you rebuild the INDEX file in /usr/ports (via make index) then it might complain about missing packages. Just ignore it, it doesn't actually require them.

In my years of working with the FreeBSD ports tree (since 3.1), I have yet to come across a English-language port that required a non-English-language port. (Haven't tested the reverse.)
