I would have thought it was needed.
When a BSD system is killed before it un mounts the mounts it can cause file problems, linking etc. So a fsck would check and see if there is any issues.
I think the main think would be to find out why its crashing and see if you can get that fixed.
I have a 120GB mirror pair in and fsck takes no more than 5-10 mins.
Is fsck reporting some errors?
