can anyone point me to a nice guide for setting up freebsd 5.1 as a gateway with an ADSL connection?

Daemonnews.org has this article and although it's for an older version of FreeBSD, you should be able to adapt it for your own use. You can also look at this thread in the support forums. The Handbook should also be a good place to look.

Are you having concrete troubles or are you just looking for a place to start?

I got mine setup with PPPOE using the handbook only. Not really a hard task once I found out that I have to use a login of "login#0001@t-online.de" instead of "login" only for my ISP....

im just lookin for a place to start. my dsl connection shud be here in a couple weeks so im gathering my knowledge before i start
