error when I try to install XFree86-4
I downloaded from releng4.freebsd.org's ftp and grab the /snapshots/4.4-XXXXX-STABLE/ (note: XXXXX is date) then installed it in another machine in Binary without X. After that, I went straight to /usr/ports and tried to install XFree86 4.10_10 and I will get "***Error code: 1" while XFree86 tried to compile.
I am wondering if I have to do the CSVUP, kernel recompile and worldbuild first with XFREE86_VERSION=4 in the /etc/make.conf before I install XFree86-4xx? I have no problem with another machine when I installed FreeBSD-4.4-RELEASE in Binary without X then upgrade to 4.4-STABLE. After that, I install XFree86-4xxx with no problem. Thanks, Mezz |

No but recommended, just so you can get your uname -r of 4.4-XXXXX-STABLE to be changed to 4.4-STABLE instead of altering /usr/src/sys/conf/newvers.sh by hand. BTW, the cvs change is minimal, buildworld is difficult to fail. >> with XFREE86_VERSION=4 in the /etc/make.conf before I install XFree86-4xx? For that, absolutely. As I said dozen times, if you must install X, there are at least 100 essential steps you should first do. Getting X to install immediately will break things potentially. |

Well, I already tried did the search in here and didn't find any before I posted this message. Also, I went to freebsd.org's handbook about install XFree86 in chapter 5 and I did same exactly, but I still get same error ever thought I set XFREE86_VERSION=4 in /etc/make.conf. Should I put XFREE86_VERSION=4 in /etc/make.conf for the CVSUP, buildworld and others without have X install? I don't really see any of steps before install X in freebsd.org's handbook. Am I missing something? I will wait until you reply again then I will go ahead CVSUP and others first before install X as you said it's recommended. Thanks, Mezz |

What error? Please don't give us the catch-all error -> ***Error code: 1. >> Should I put XFREE86_VERSION=4 in /etc/make.conf....without have X install? Yes, do so if you plan to install X in the future, and do it prior to installing anything from your ports tree, of course, including /usr/ports/x11/XFree86-4. >> I will go ahead CVSUP and others first Yes, do those first. |

Thanks freebsd, now everything is solved! I guess, it's must to do the CVSUP, recompile kernel, buildworld and others first, before do anything in FreeBSD. It does fixed the problem as well. I noticed, when I do all those stuffs first and it get more stable and faster than another computer that was do those stuffs at last.
