FreeBSD and Java woes

Hi, I'm trying to install Java 1.4.2 on my FreeBSD box but I can't. I followed the instructions but when I compile it, it says it can't execute the binary (sometimes reporting a syntax error near "("). Okay, so I just read that there are problems with 5.X for those reasons. Anyways, I installed the version that runs with Linux emulation and it doesn't report binary problems but says the JRE wasn't properly start. Is there any way to successfuly run Java on FreeBSd 5.x
