FreeBSD Handbook - Using Ports

doesn't get much more straight-forward than the instructions in the handbook. I'd suggest using sysinstall and installing the ports from an FTP server (installation medium) if you do not have the CD's.

If you have internet access to this box then do this...

From shell...

pkg_add -rv cvsup-without-gui
then create a file anywhere and named it whatever, for this example we'll name it ports-update

In the ports-update, use any editor to open it up and put this...

*default host=cvsup10.freebsd.org
*default base=/usr
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=.
*default delete use-rel-suffix
*default compress
ports-all

then save it, close, and do cvsup /path/to/ports-update

That should download/update your port tree/

The ports.tar.gz file might be on CD2 IIRC. Nowadays, I just grab ports.tar.gz from /pub/FreeBSD/ports/ports and untar it to /usr/ports. Then, I keep it upgraded using cvsup like Joe detailed above.

There is an option in sysinstall for adding the ports tree. I just add it durring the install and the keep it updated with cvsup. Also the port fastest_cvsup is helpful in finding a fast server.

If it is the cd rom's that you are looking for, you can try the linuxiso.org website, and get the cd's in iso format. Might be of some help there.
