Installs fine, but won't boot.

I've been trying to get FreeBSD to run on my Toshiba
Satellite (m45 359). I tried a couple of times with
version 6.0 and the install went fine, but the
computer doesn't seem to recognize the drive as being
bootable. (So I experimented with a couple different
options: standard boot manager, bsd boot manager,
setting the partition (yes, it's a primary) to
bootable, even erasing the whole drive and allocating
it to FreeBSD. Regardless of what I've tried, the boot
sequence doesn't see a hardrive and skips it.

Also tried 5.4, but that freezes on booting the
install cd (probably just need to disable acpi) but I
really don't want 5.4 anyways.

Currently I'm writing this from ubuntu dapper (as a
test) - install went smooth and grub loaded with no
problem but I'd really prefer to get back to bsd.

Thanks for anyway help or feedback.

Interesting problem you have there. At what point does it not boot? Does it even make it to the boot loader or is the bios that is not seeing it?

Thank you for replying

Thanks for the reply - yes, the problem really is kind
of strange.

The computer never makes it to the boot loader. :-( I suspected the BIOS, but I have the boot order set for CDROM > HDD > LAN > FDD (or something to that regard.)

Everytime I tried booting, the computer would just try
connecting to the LAN (cdrom was empty, but that will
boot first without any problems when a disc is in the
drive).

I really thought the BSD boot manager would have been
recognized like grub or winxp's.

Well, it should be. Make sure that you have the latest bios and try setting the hard drive as the first boot device.

Make sure your hard drive is the primary boot and set to master (no reason why it wouldn't be, but who knows). Then make sure you're all updated and give it a whirl. Also, you can boot your BSD system on the HD after booting from a CD

Apologies for dredging up this old thread, but I just experienced this same problem. The PC is an off-business-lease Compaq Evo (P4 1.8GHz 512MB etc.) that I got from a local computer shop (they were practically giving them away). The install of 6.1FreeBSD went smooth, no errors, no warnings. The first boot from hard disk went like:
Code:
Attempting Boot From Hard Drive (C:)
-
int=0000000d  err=00000000  efl=00030246  eip=0000c9c7

esi=000008a6  edi=00014000  epb=0000150c  esp=000014da
cs=f000  ds=ed03  es=ed03    fs=0000  gs=0000  ss=ed03

ss:esp=00 40 01 00 a6 08 00 00-0c 15 00 00 fa 14 00 00
       01 00 00 00 af d6 00 00-01 00 00 00 20 00 00 00
BTX halted

with the cursor blinking under the '-' in the second line. Setting the hard disk as the first boot device was the solution.

My question is WHY (just trying to understand what happened)? I could not find any information on this in the Handbook or FAQs. Could someone possibly interpret the dump? Thanks,

Ben N1NP
